Environment

We take a holistic approach to developing our commitment to environmental protection – from climate protection through water consumption and the circular economy, to innovative and environmentally friendly products. We measure and document our progress with respect to the environment by means of our certified energy and environmental management system, thereby establishing a basis for achieving our climate and environmental protection goals.

We report our key performance indicators in line with GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) standards for all sites with more than 100 employees. We are also committed to various organizations and networks such as the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the UN Global Compact, and the „Klimapakt Münchner Wirtschaft“ (Munich Business Climate Pact).

Climate protection and greenhouse gas emissions

Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time and demands swift global action by all stakeholders. To avoid greenhouse gas emissions, we produce our own renewable energy – in 2020, for example, we successfully launched a major project to produce our own regenerative energy at our site in Malaysia. We are also constantly modernizing our infrastructure, reducing energy consumption, and increasing our share of renewable energy purchases.

Our goals:

Taking 2022 as a baseline, we aim to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by 42 percent by the year 2030 and bring them down to net zero by 2040. These goals cover Scopes 1, 2, and 3.For the development of these targets, we drew on the criteria set down by the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and report our emissions in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG). We have also set ourselves a target with respect to the purchase of electricity, with 85 percent of our needs to be supplied from renewables by 2030.

Water

Water is a key topic for G+D, because of our water-intensive production processes, particularly for banknotes. Accordingly, around 90 percent of our water consumption takes place at the Louisenthal and Königstein sites. We use water not only for paper production at these sites, but also for cooling the factory and generating our own renewable power. We have also installed a biological purification plant in Louisenthal in order to clean and reuse our process water. With this process, we manage to leave far more water in the Mangfall River than legally required. As with environmental protection, we follow strict rules for water protection and at the same time also contribute to the energy transition in terms of water usage.

Our goals:

We want to reduce our absolute water consumption by 10 percent by 2030 (compared to 2020). To reach this goal we review the development of our water consumption on a constant basis, and focus on innovative technologies.

Waste and recycling

For recycling opportunities, we look at our entire development and production process. The results of this can be seen in products such as the Convego® Recycle Card card as well as, for example, in our PVC card production, where we further process and reuse scrap. We also take back used smartcards and wearables and supply them for recycling.

We avoid waste as much as possible – completely eliminating waste in our production processes is made difficult by our customers’ strict security requirements however, and in some areas is currently not possible. In processes where waste cannot be avoided, we rely on thermal recovery for energy generation.

Our goals:

We want to achieve our target of zero waste to landfill by 2030. This target applies group-wide. In addition, we have set ourselves the goal of constantly increasing our recycling rate in all business areas.

Green products

When we develop and design new products we do so with a particular focus on the protection of the environment and natural resources. This creates product innovations that provide future-fit added value for both the environment and our customers around the world. We have developed strict criteria to classify a product as “green”. With these criteria we ensure that new products positively contribute to our environmental goals (climate, water and waste) and are always more sustainable than previous product versions.

With respect to dangerous substances, we strictly comply with the REACH Directive.

Our goals:

We want to generate 75 percent of our revenue from green products by 2040. We are aware that this means a comprehensive transformation in many business fields. We are taking a proactive approach to this and are working together with our partners and customers. First success stories are already visible today:
